In 1917 Hussem goes to the art academy in Rotterdam, he does not like it here and leaves the academy after a year to take lessons with painter and graphic artist Dirk Nijland.
Willem Hussem has lived and worked in the south of France, Paris and The Hague. In 1919 he left for the south of France to further develop himself. He lives in Paris for a few years and here he became acquainted with greats such as Picasso and Mondrian. After having lived in France for 18 years, Willem Hussem returned to the Netherlands in 1936 and settled in The Hague. Here he develops into the painter of abstract works with geometric shapes, which is now his best-known work. Willem Hussem also made a number of murals, sculptures and sculptures. In 1956 he became a member of the Posthoorngroep and in 1960 his work was shown at the Venice Biennale.
