About
Jan van Heel trained at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. Worked in Rotterdam, Paris (1946-1947) and The Hague. He was a member of Pulchri Studio and in 1928 one of the founders of De Werkers with, among others, Rein Drayer, Albert Termote and Piet Bulthuis. In 1936 he co-founded the artist group "De Groep". In 1951 he founded the group Verve with artists from The Hague (including Herman Berserik, Co Westerik, Willem Hussem and Jaap Nanninga) and in 1960 the group Fugare.

His work is considered part of the new Hague school. The themes for which Van Heel was famous were the clown and, after a first visit to Spain, especially the Spanish earth, which showed itself to be rough and untouched. Other colors appeared in his work: "saturated brown, glowing red, burning ochres, silent green".
He won the Pulchri Studio Spring Prize in 1948, 2nd Jacob Hartog Prize (1952), Jacob Maris Prize (1954), Jacob Hartog Prize (1959), Talens Prize (1964), Jacob Maris Oeuvre Prize (1965). He held many administrative and advisory positions and was government purchaser for the 'school decoration' collections and aesthetic advisor to the Ministry of Education.

Jan van Heel is one of the most important representatives of post-war realism.
