Founded in 1917 - dissolved in 1926
De Branding was founded in Rotterdam in 1917 after the work of a group of young Rotterdam artists was refused at the Vierjaarlijksche Tentoonstelling. The aim of De Branding was to bring the city of Rotterdam more into contact with modern art, among other things by making and displaying it itself. De Branding sometimes moved to Utrecht, Amsterdam or The Hague, so the exhibitions were also held outside Rotterdam. The members of the Surf had different styles. However, many members of the Branding were influenced by the occult and esoteric currents. They wanted to portray the "vibration of the inner being". The works of the Branding artists are all about the expression of the soul. Yet the works of the members of the Branding are very different.
