Henk CHABOT was a son of Willem Chabot and Johanna Aantje van den Hoven. As a child he moved with his parents to Rotterdam in 1906. He attended the evening course at the Rotterdam Academy and received lessons from Antoon Derkzen van Angeren (etching) among others. From 1915 he worked as a restorer, from 1916 in his own studio on the Zuidblaak, and shortly afterwards in the Wijnstraat. In the early 1920s he traveled to Germany and Austria and visited the museums of Dresden, Munich and Vienna, among others. Shortly afterwards he made his first sculptures. He joined the artists' group De Branding (founded around 1915, disbanded in 1926) to which, among others, were also associated: L. van Kuyk, G. Ladage, T. Gits, B. Canter, J. Tielens, G. Rober, H. Bieling, M. and R. Richters, P. Begeer and L. Bolle. From the thirties, painting took over sculpting: subjects were borrowed from Rotterdam's city and harbor life. In 1933 he stayed in Vrouwenpolder in Zeeland, where he met Charley Toorop. New subjects became: the sea, farmers, horses and cows. Chabot joined the artists' group R33 (disbanded in 1940). In 1934 he settled on the Rotte in Bergschenhoek near Rotterdam. Most of the work was stored in the storage space of the studio on Wijnstraat, where his brother Wim continued to work. When Wim moves his studio to the Wijnhaven in 1936, Henk's stored work moves with it. In 1937 ?The Footballer? unveiled, a large statue in concrete (Feijenoord stadium). He was commissioned for a painting in the captain's cabin of the New Amsterdam of the Holland-America Line: Chabot rented a more spacious studio for this and painted a large landscape. Before the war, he regularly exhibited with Carel van Lier in his Kunstzaal Van Lier in Amsterdam. . In the last years before the war and shortly afterwards, he was more or less the figurehead of Dutch visual art. war. In the years that follow, the palette quickly becomes lighter. New themes include: double and separate heads (physiognomy of laughter) and in ?48 variations on the motif ?mother with child?. Chabot died in 1949 in Rotterdam.
