After studying economics at the University of Groningen, which he graduated cum laude in 1970, he initially worked in Groningen, and later for a few years at the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Social Work. In 1978 he went to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, which he left in 1983 with a diploma. Initially he made many paintings and graphics, but later he became more involved with drawings, often heads or nudes in color, and photography, in which he made extensive use of distortions.

In the meantime, he was and continues to be involved in economics, especially the economics of art. From 1990-2005 he taught at the Rotterdam Erasmus University, where he obtained his doctorate in 2002. From September 2005 to August 2008, Abbing was professor by special appointment in sociology of art at the University of Amsterdam, where he held the Boekman chair.
