Lives and works in Amsterdam.
Hans Abbing started out as a painter and graphic artist, later he mainly focused on drawing and photography. He makes portraits or nudes, often distorted from reality. In addition to drawing and photographing, he regularly publishes articles as an economist.
Hans Abbing tries to create a new reality with his art. Often by photographing or drawing faces or bodies that appear deformed. He experiences these figures as more beautiful and more truthful than real people. Because less hypocritical. Intuition also plays an important role in the creation of his work, but this does not mean his work is random. On the contrary, Hans Abbing finds the fight between letting go and control interesting. He consciously opts for limitations, for example in the choice of his material and/or model, and the size of the paper. After establishing these limits, he lets go of control and is open to all possible influences.
