  • In his paintings, Bonies uses colour to give direction to space: vertically, horizontally and diagonally. He tries to achieve synergy between the three-dimensionality or the structure of his painting and the actual space in which it exists. In this respect, Bonies sees himself as a constructor of space. He works mainly with squares and rectangles. He starts new paintings in his studio and works completely traditionally: linen on a wooden frame.

Bonies studied at the Vrije Academie voor Beeldende Kunst and the Royal Academy of The Hague, where he focused on sculpture. He studied interior design and design at the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm. In 1966 Bonies had the 'First one-person exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.' In the same year he participated in the international exhibition Forms of Colors with work by Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newmann and Frank Stella. Bonies worked with choreographer Hans van Manen, couturier Frans Molenaar and composer Simeon Ten Holt, among others. He was director of the Vrije Academie Den Haag from 1988 to 2001 and co-founded the Bond voor Beeldende Kunst Arbeiders (BBKA) in 1972.
