Willem Knip (1883-1967)

Willem Knip (1883-1967)

Wilhelm Alexander (Willem) Knip (Amsterdam 1883 - Blaricum 1967)

Willem Knip is one of the great painters of the Laren school. He was trained as a decorative painter at the Quellinius School in Amsterdam and worked for some time in Chris Lebeau's studio. To break free from decorative influences, he settled in the Gooi around 1900. There he developed a balanced impressionistic style. After traveling to Paris, later to Italy and Spain, his color became airy and light. Popular subjects were landscapes, harbor and cityscapes. Works by Knip can be seen in the Singer Museum in Laren, among others.
