Willem Brauckmann (Vlaardingen, 1946 - 2014)
Brauck began his career in 1963 with a study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. A study that he, as befitted a good artist in the sixties, did not finish. After many years of being active in the advertising and exhibition world, Brauck felt more like devoting himself fully to art. He now lived in Harderwijk, with his family, and devoted himself entirely to painting. In 1997, Brauck started a silkscreen printing company where he produces silkscreen prints for himself and for other artists. Brauck's work is not only known in the immediate vicinity, but also nationally. Many a living room or office is graced by a painting by this artist. Brauck now divides his time between silkscreen printing his own work and only a few other artists and painting both free work and commissions for the business community. Making objects is also one of his activities, albeit to a lesser extent and usually on commission. With his paintings, Brauck shows how he looks at existence. He tries to make the viewer aware of the duality within today's society: the constructive on the one hand and the destructive on the other. It is therefore no coincidence that Brauck was struck by Shostakovich's score. The graphic image of the handwriting inspired him greatly. In the scribbled notes he saw a combination of a frantic writing method and an inner nervousness. That appealed to him. In addition to this theme, Brauck mainly paints landscapes. A preference for the French landscape becomes visible when you look at the paintings. The warmth radiates from the canvas and here too the graphic background is clearly visible, given the division of planes and composition in the paintings. Brauck regularly visits France, to experience the atmosphere, to capture the lines of the landscape and of course to immerse himself in the 'savoir vivre'. But not only the landscapes are a source of inspiration, he also finds the old advertising murals that can be seen along the N-roads very fascinating. The older they get, the more beautiful, sometimes with 3 layers on top of each other and partly worn they form a beautiful painting. The French themselves see nothing in them, just old advertisements, but Brauck sees the beauty of it and wants to capture that. It happens more and more often that the paintings disappear under modern billboards, so eventually nothing remains. Very unfortunate. It can also happen that Brauck is struck by the sight of a goat in a small village that behaves like the mayor of that village. Or a flock of sheep that walks under a bridge and ends up in a kind of funnel shape catches his attention. These impressions eventually result in a series of very surprising paintings. All unmistakably by Brauck, just by the use of color and the composition.
