Willem Bastiaan Tholen (Amsterdam, February 13, 1860 – The Hague, December 5, 1931) was a Dutch painter.
Tholen was born in Amsterdam in 1860 as the son of the painter, and later art dealer, Pieter Hendrik Hermanus Tholen and Johanna Maria Arendsen. He grew up in Kampen in an artistic environment.
Tholen was educated at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he obtained the MO certificate in drawing, and at the Polytechnic School in Delft, where he obtained the MO certificate in rectilinear drawing. He was taught by Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel, among others. In Delft Tholen was taught by Adolf le Comte.
After his training as an art teacher, Tholen settled in Gouda and then in Kampen. He then lived and worked in various places in the Netherlands. Nature was Tholen's greatest source of inspiration.
Tholen married Jacoba Suzanna Muller in 1886, who died in 1918. He married Lita de Ranitz again in 1919. He lived and worked in The Hague at the so-called Canal Villa. He was a member of the artists' society Pulchri Studio in The Hague. He died in December 1931 at the age of 71 in his hometown The Hague. He was buried in the New Cemetery on the Soerenseweg in Apeldoorn in the grave of his father.
His work was awarded the 'gold medal' in 1903, made available by the Queen Mother Emma.
Tholen's work can be seen in the following museums, among others: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Stedelijke Museum, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Dordrechts Museum, Kunstmuseum The Hague, Groninger Museum, Centraal Museum, Museum Gouda, Zuiderzee Museum (Utrecht), Museum Arnhem.
