Beautiful graph by Ria Exel. Ria (Maria Geertruida Elisabeth) van Klaveren - Exel was born on May 11, 1915 in Rotterdam and died on March 19, 1985 in The Hague. Her mother had Irish forefathers who worked in shipping and her father was a history teacher and writer from Duisburg. She trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.
She worked in Rotterdam, The Hague and Paris, among others. Made study trips to Italy and Switzerland, Basel and Zurich.
During the war she contributed to resistance publications, which was not without consequences. At that time she provided illustrations for an edition of stories by the poet RM Rilke. From 1952 to 1958 she was a teacher at the Royal Academy in The Hague. In 1959 she won the Edinburgh Prize for her etchings. Ria Exel was a versatile artist, who was best known for her etchings, drawings and illustrations, but was also involved in making tapestries, sculptures and paintings.
Various exhibitions at home and abroad, including in the Posthoorn and galleries in Rotterdam, Leiden and Amsterdam. Outside the Netherlands she was shown in the Collective exhibition together with Paul Citroen, Jenny Dalenoord in Brussels (Benelux House) in 1958 and in 1959 in Berlin together with Kees Andréa, Paul Citroen, Jenny Dalenoord.
Member of the Haagse Kunstkring and the Posthoorn group.
There is a slight color difference between the print and where a passe aprout once sat, but when using a new passe partout it is easily presentable. Signed in pencil.
