Dutch painter, graphic artist, photographer, writer and teacher Paul Citroen was born on 15 December 1896 in Berlin. His father, who came from Amsterdam, had a fur business in Berlin. Citroen described the environment in which he grew up as bourgeois. "For me, a certain stability, a certain peace, emanates from the bourgeois, because I cannot fully understand how bourgeois I am myself, but I am a moderate person because I know so well what temptation there is in fanaticism."
