Maarten Antonie van Dreven was born on 12 July 1941 in Sneek and died on 7 February 2001 in The Hague. Studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Together with the young artists he met through the academy, Pat Andrea, Peter Blokhuis, Walter Nobbe and Jurjen de Haan, he is considered to be one of the Hague's "New Realists".
Maarten van Dreven and his life partner Jurjen de Haan were the representatives of photorealism (hyperrealism). He, like Jurjen de Haan, preferred to work on a large scale, with the subject of silent masks and body protectors, worked out in extremely careful drawings. His background as a fashion designer is clearly visible.
Won the Jacob Hartog Prize in 1978 with the painting Mister Spaceman 2. Listed in the Jacobs.
