About the artist:
Joost Swarte (Heemstede, December 24, 1947) is a Dutch comics artist and graphic designer. He is most famous for his "clear line" and coined this term.
The comic book author coined the term 'clear line' as a defining style characteristic for his work in 1976 at a Hergé exhibition in Rotterdam. In this context, Swarte refers to a pure drawing style with the following characteristics: clear contour lines, bright colored areas without line perspective via shadow without details. The effect of this is maximum and unambiguous legibility of the drawing.

Joost Swarte studied industrial design in Eindhoven and started drawing comics and graphics at the end of the 1960s. In 1971 he started his own comic magazine Modern Papier and regularly contributed to magazines such as Aloha (weekly) and Tante Leny Presenteert. .
Swarte's figures and series are: 'Katoen en Pinbal', 'Jopo de Pojo', 'Anton Makassar', 'Dr Ben Cine' and 'Niet Zo, Maar Zo'. But Swarte is best known for his countless drawings, stamps, posters, postcards, LP and CD covers and for his designs for magazine covers (such as for the Dutch weekly Vrij Nederland, the Belgian weekly Humo and the Italian architecture magazine Abitare .
He received international recognition around 1980 when he first participated in the international comics exhibition 'Angoulême International Comics Festival' (France). His work has been translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. Swarte, Hors Serie, an overview of his work was published by Futuropolis (Paris) in 1984.
In the mid-eighties he founded the publishing house Oog & Blik together with Hansje Joustra. This publishing house mainly focused on publishing author comics and picture books by well-known artists. In addition, many screen prints by Swarte were also distributed in the Benelux via this route.
Besides comics and graphic design, Joost Swarte also designs furniture, stained glass windows, murals and other objects. He even designed a theater for Haarlem, the Toneelschuur, which was built in collaboration with Mecanoo Architects. The Johan Enschedé Hof can be found around the corner from the Toneelschuur in Haarlem. Swarte made a large stained glass window for this courtyard. Joost Swarte also designed the new carpet for the Gravenzaal of the Haarlem town hall. Joost Swarte also designed, in collaboration with architect Sytze Visser, four special rental apartments in the Willemsstraat in the Jordaan in Amsterdam. These luxury apartments were completed in 2010. Swarte and his family lived a trial month in one of the apartments.
In 1992 Swarte was the initiator of the Stripdagen Haarlem, a biennial international strip event held in Haarlem. Swarte has received numerous awards for his work. In 2004 Swarte was knighted by Beatrix of the Netherlands to the Order of Orange-Nassau. In recent years, Swarte has made many illustrations for The New Yorker magazine. In 2007 Swarte, himself a former Scout, designed the Europe stamp with the subject 100 years Scouting.
When designing the new Hergé museum in Louvain-la-Neuve, Walloon Brabant, Swarte was part of the team that drew up the script. He also designed the scenography of the various exhibition spaces. In the summer of 2010 there was an exhibition on his visual work in the Hergé Museum. In addition to drawings, there are also stained glass windows after Swarte's design of a monastery chapel in Grenoble, now a library of the French publishing house Glénat.

Joost Swarte won the Marten Toonder Prize in 2012. The oeuvre prize is intended for cartoonists who have made a special contribution to the visual story.
