Joost Swarte (Heemstede, December 24, 1947) is a Dutch comics artist and graphic designer. He is best known for his clear line. He coined the term 'clear line' as a defining style characteristic for his work in 1976 at a Hergé exhibition in Rotterdam, "Tintin in Rotterdam". In this context, Swarte refers to “a purified drawing style with the following characteristics: clear contour lines, bright colored areas without perspective effect. through shadow without details. The effect of this is maximum and unambiguous legibility of the drawing”. Joost Swarte studied industrial design in Eindhoven and started drawing comics and graphics at the end of the 1960s. In 1971 he started his own comic magazine Modern Papier and regularly contributed to magazines such as Aloha and Tante Leny Presenteert. But Swarte is best known for his countless drawings, stamps, posters, postcards, LP and CD covers and for his designs for magazine covers (such as for the Dutch weekly Vrij Nederland, the Belgian weekly Humo and the Italian architecture magazine Abitare ). He received international recognition around 1980 when he first participated in the international comics exhibition 'Salon International de la Bande Dessinée' in Angoulême (France). His work has been translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. Swarte, Hors Serie, an overview of his work was published by Futuropolis (Paris) in 1984. Besides comics and graphic design, Joost Swarte also designs furniture, stained glass windows, murals and other objects.
