Hans Koetsier werkte aanvankelijk in de reclame. Hij had een voorliefde voor typografie. Hij schilderde cijfers en fragmenten van cijfers en verwerkte die ook in zeefdrukken. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot conceptueel kunstenaar en in 1969 plaatste hij in Vrij Nederland de eerste van een reeks advertenties onder de titel Random art/Probability art
