Hard Edge is a form of abstract painting. It can be seen as part of Postpainterly Abstraction, and thus as a reaction to Abstract Expressionism. The focus within Hard Edge is mainly on the use of contrasting colors and their effect. Colors are applied in geometric shapes and separated from each other by means of a sharp border. The aim is to intensify the perception of the colors for the viewer.
