Eja Siepman van den Berg 1943 -
Eja Siepman van den Berg trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (1962-1967). Her career immediately took off when she won the Prix de Rome in 1967. As a sculptor she is related to the ideas of Charlotte van Pallandt, at the time one of the few women who stood firm in a male-dominated sculpting world. In 1978 she was the first winner of the Charlottte van Pallandt Prize, a national prize for young talent up to 35 years old.
The human body is the starting point for her. And then she starts reducing. How much can you remove without losing the humanity of the image? The artist is relentless in that process. More and more elements disappear. What remains is clear symmetry, wavy curves and shiny bronze. She has found a perfect balance between figuration and abstraction. Her statues are made of bronze and marble. In 2017, her classic yet modern oeuvre was awarded the prestigious Wilhelminaring.
Her work is represented in both museum and private collections. Her images can be admired in many places in public spaces.
