Willem Heesen was an artist and designer of glass objects. He was an important figure in the development of the free glass art and studio glass movement. Heesen learned to draw and model at the Civic Evening School for Art Industrial Education. When he came into contact with the Vereenigde Glasfabrieken, he got to know glass as a material and became acquainted with Andries Copier. In the 1940s he was accepted as a student at the Glass School Leerdam, where Copier taught him together with Livinus van der Bundt and Siebren Valkema, among others. He continued his studies at the Free Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and went on to design at the glass factory in Leerdam, where he became chief designer in the 1960s. In 1977 he founded his own glass studio called De Oude Horn. This became a meeting place for artists who wanted to experiment with glass.
