Wilhelm WAGENFELD (Bremen 1900 - Stuttgart 1990)
Wilhelm Wagenfeld studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar under Lászlò Moholy-Nagy.
After the dissolution of the Bauhaus, he became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and started as an assistant to Richard Winkelmayer. From 1930 Wagenfeld worked a lot as an independent designer and collaborated with glass blowers. He also taught during this period.
Wagenfeld served in the military during World War II and was released from prison in 1945. He then became a teacher at various academies and acted as a design consultant for companies.
Between 1950 and 1977 he collaborated with WMF and established an experimental workshop. Wagenfeld is considered a pioneer of German industrial design and is known for his designs for collections and utensils. In doing so, he responded to the changing demands that his audience places on their living environment. For Wagenfeld, functionality was paramount. His products had to be of high quality, yet affordable for the working class.
