In 1921, Paolo Venini and Giacomo Cappellin founded the glassworks of Cappellin Venini & C. with painter Vittorio Zecchin. Andrea Rioda later joined the troupe. Both Rioda and Cappellin left after a few years. The factory was split up, from which Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Venini & C. emerged, with Napoleone Martinuzzi as artistic director. In 1928 he introduced pulegoso glass in which air bubbles make the glass opaque. In 1940 Carlo Scarpa and Venini introduced techniques such as tessuti, granulari, mrine and battuti. In 1948 Venini launched new works by Fulvio Bianconi and several years later they came up with more new collections. The factory thrived in the 1950s with colorful and modern designs created in collaboration with designers.
In 1972 a fire broke out at the factory in which many original prototypes and drawings were lost. In the years that followed, Venini collaborated with designers such as Ettore Sottsass, Brigitta Karlsson and Philip Baldwin. In 2001 Venini was acquired by Italian Luxury Industries.
