Sujatno Koempoel (1912-1987)

Sujatno Koempoel (1912-1987)

Sujatno KOEMPOEL (Paron Village 1912 - ??1987)

His father was an officer of the railway company of the Dutch Indies government during colonialism. He still inherited royal blood from his ancestor, RA. Prawirodidjo, who was also known as the Prince Sentot Ali Basah Prawirodirjo.

Such parentage enabled him to enroll in the technical school (HIS) in Surabaya, the capital of East Java, which later proved beneficial for the development of his painting technique.

Koempoel's talent caught the eye of Van Staal, the school's director. He recommended Koempoel to naturalist Gerard Pieter Adolfs, one of the proponents of the Mooi Indie style. During 1928-1932, Adolfs Koempoel learned some realistic painting techniques that would later become a key to his success.

Since then, Koempoel continued to explore the bustle and landscapes of Surabaya for his painting objects.
