Rodolfo Gonzalez-Mele was born on August 19, 1928 in Buenos Aires (ARG). He studies at the Art Academy of Buenos Aires and has won many prizes since 1963. In that year he receives a grant that allows him to travel for a year in Europe. In 1964 he came into contact with Louis Thijssen of the ceramic Industrie Loré in Beesel (le) and worked in this company until 1969 as a designer and glaze developer. After that he has his own studio in Roermond for two years. Gonzales-Mele teaches at the St. Joost Art Academy in Breda and teaches various ceramists, including Joop Crompvoets in Swalmen. In 1971 he became chief designer at De Steenbok in Reuver. His designs there become a great success. Together with his wife Elena, Gonzales-Mele opens his own studio in Baarlo in 1975. He signs here with the stamp RODOLFO. Here they make ceramics in the vein of Jan van der Vaart, among others. Striking large tiles are also made from Westerwalder clay. The decors of these tiles are pressed into the clay using textiles (crochet doilies). The Gonzales-Mele couple moves to Barcelona (ESP) in 1992.
