Paul Rollman (1924-2014)

Paul Rollman (1924-2014)

Painter, Musician

Paul Rollman was born on 11 May 1924 in the Amsterdam Jordaan (Elandsstraat). He was and is (because he is still alive) a real tout. Paul is now a well-known painter, but he is also a singer, horse dealer and writer. Paul grabbed everything to get money, he says: "I always had a few Paul Rollman tenners more than anyone else". After three years of school, he gave up on that, and at the age of twelve he became an independent entrepreneur.

His father was a communist but also a pauper, says Rollman about his father, "he could never earn a penny". The Jordaan doesn't say much to Paul, during his youth the Jordaan was more of a cheap labor reservoir than it was such a pleasant neighborhood. Later, Paul would sometimes sing with Bolle Jan and record a number of singles. Paul's most famous songs are 'Tomorrow would be his birthday', 'ME, ME, ME, Holadiejee', 'Oh Annie', 'If you're looking for me' and 'Like father, like son'.

When the war broke out, Paul Rollman was 15, he saw the Germans entering the city on the Rozengracht, a day later it was his birthday. They lived in the Ten Catestraat and Paul becomes an ordinance (messenger) but navigates through all the cracks, he is cheeky but not 'stupidly brutal' as Paul himself calls it. In Nieuwe Kerkstraat (the Jews were called Kerkstraat during the war) he went to a studio where he made enormous numbers of paintings and painted tiles that were in great demand. Because he was the only Christian, he could afford a lot and survived the war
