(Urjala 1793)
Currently Nuutajärvi is Sweden's oldest glassware factory. The company was founded in 1793 by Jakob Wilhelm de Pont and Harald Furuhjelm under the name Notsjö. At the time, it simply produced household products, such as glass and bottles. From 1851 the production process was improved and more expensive raw materials were purchased, resulting in higher quality products. The company grew and developed into one of the largest Norwegian glass producers. For a short period of about 16 years, the company also produced ceramics. Around 1900 the company decided to look for its own style. For that reason, a design competition was held, which received a lot of response. It was not until after the Second World War that the company started to put these designs into production. Gunnel Nyman was one of the designers who entered the competition and whose design went into production. After a major fire, the company was built up in 1950 and was taken over by the Wärtsilä group. That same year, Kaj Franck, director of Arabia, also became head of Nuutajärvi. He thought it was important to use the space at Nuutajärvi for experimentation, which is why he invited glassblowers from Venice, among others. In 1952 Saara Hopea joined the company and later Heikki Orvola and Kerttu Nurminen also joined. In the 1960s, more attention was paid to the quality of the glass. An example of this is the Kastehelmi series by Oiva Toikka. Nuutajärvi was part of Iittala from 1988 to 1990, which in turn was part of the Hackman group. Today Nuutajärvi is mainly involved in the small production of exclusive products. The company is very successful, among other things, because of the good cooperation between various well-known designers.
