Max LIEBERMANN (Berlin 1847 - 1935)
Impressionist artist Max Liebermann was born in Berlin in 1847 as the son of a Jewish textile manufacturer. He was educated at the Weimar Academy. In 1871 he came to the Netherlands for the first time. For forty years he spent the summer months here and met friends and colleagues, including Jozef and Isaac Israels and Jan Veth. He stayed in the countryside (Laren, Dongen), in the fishing villages on the North Sea coast, on the beach and also in Amsterdam. From 1920, Liebermann was president of the Prussian Academy in Berlin. In 1933 he had to resign his position as chairman after the seizure of power by the Nazis. He died in Berlin in 1935.
