Marcel Maele, van (1931-2009)
Marcel VAN MAELE (1931-2009) was an author and plastic artist. At the age of 14 he began a vagabond life that led him as a citizen of the world through thirty countries and countless professions: from dishwasher to UN volunteer in Korea (1952-1953). He settled in Belgium again in 1956, but never lived at the same address for long. His marginal way of life and non-conformist behavior meanwhile made him an almost legendary figure in Flemish literature. Society therefore never knew what to do with him: he was arrested several times and/or entrusted to psychiatry. Van Maele has published 25 collections of poetry, 3 plays and 4 novels. His work was awarded, among others, the Dirk Martens Prize for Poetry (1966), the August Beernaert Prize (1996) and the Ark Prize of the Free Word (1972).
