Krijn Giezen (1939-2011)

Krijn Giezen (1939-2011)

Krijn Giezen (1939-2011) Played a pioneering role in land art, ecological and conceptual art in the Netherlands and was closely linked to the program of Stroom Den Haag with several projects in public space. He represented the Netherlands at the Venice Bi_nnale in 1978, where he offered visitors his own hand-fished and smoked herrings for ten days. In 2005 he realized 'Look Out Attention' at the Kr_ller-M_ller museum: a gigantic staircase of 300 steps, which offered a unique view of the surroundings of the Hoge Veluwe. Krijn Giezen was a man from the coast. He was born in Noordwijk aan Zee, and lived and worked withdrawn in a spartan castle on the coast of Normandy. His art grew out of an attitude to the world, which testified to a great commitment to nature and human action. His artistry did not always lead to a product, but could equally well be the initiation of a change in mentality. The anarchic humor of Fluxus, with an emphasis on play and self-invented rules, formed the basis of many of his actions and objects. In his work he combined the robustness of nature with the inventiveness of the farmer, fisherman and craftsman. Recipes, manuals and inventions were noted down by him and incorporated into visual documentation. Nostalgia was not his motivation, but he longed to preserve and revive the useful and essential of nature and human action. The scale on which he realized his work varied from minuscule to overwhelming. Krijn Giezen has always had a special bond with the city of The Hague. From 1956 to 1961 he studied there at the Royal Academy of Art, where he also taught in the late 1970s. In 1961 he shared a studio with Peter Struycken and in 1965 he was part of the exhibition 'Ten artists from The Hague' that was on display at Galerie Uno in Venet_. At Stroom's invitation, he worked on a number of projects in The Hague. In 1992, for example, he made an analysis of the Haagse Beek that flows from the dunes (Kijkduin) via the Peace Palace and from there underground to the Hofvijver. The course of the stream appears to have been changed, rebuilt and polluted in the past centuries. As an extension of this, Giezen's plan: Making the Haagse Beek visible, could be realized in early 2000.
