Kees Kieft (1919-1999)

Kees Kieft spent the most important part of his life in the city of Kampen, where he lived in a striking walled house with a pot house next to the Koornmarktspoort.

In his spare time he fanatically used a pencil and paintbrush. He was stimulated in this by his wife and by the contacts he maintained with artists' associations, such as 'Het Palet' in Zwolle, where he learned more from Stien Eelsingh (Staphorst) and Piet Zwiers (Giethoorn) among others.

In 1959 he founded 'De Varfdeuze' in Kampen, of which association he was chairman for many years.

Initially, Kieft worked exclusively figuratively, allowing himself all kinds of liberties. Later he placed a lot of emphasis on the materials used, such as synthetic resin, mortar, glass and sand, which he often processed or colored with paint. His use of materials is undoubtedly influenced by his work at the Schokbetonfabriek in his hometown. His paintings, which are sometimes almost reliefs, became increasingly abstract. Cutouts in surfaces started to play an important role, as did the special use of colour.

When Kees Kieft was forced to give up his daily work in 1974 due to various circumstances, his way of painting became even more free and professional. He tirelessly threw himself into art and created an oeuvre 'that possesses all the hallmarks of an independent and idiosyncratic artistry'. The work took on an increasingly monumental appearance, and lent itself well to an architectural context. Authorities such as the well-known museum directors Wim Beeren and Rudi Fuchs visited his studio home. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, for which Kees cherished sacred respect and which he regularly visited, owns work by him.
