Jules BEKKER (The Hague 1939)
Painter, Graphic artist
Education:
Jules Bekker was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Free Academy in The Hague.
He lives and works in Harlingen
Jules Bekker is a very talented artist who time and again succeeds in surprising the viewer with his originality and inventiveness. The dancing lines and patterns in combination with recognizable figures are characteristic of his work. The iconography of his characters, usually consisting of people and animals with a mostly sun-drenched background, gives a sensual and at the same time humorous impression. His later work consists of dream landscapes with surrealistic motifs, painted on small canvases. Jules Bekker paints a world in development; nothing is certain yet. Rocky formations, inhabited by grotesque, fantasy animals with soft, subtle colors and dynamic structures as a background. The skies are misty and fossils can be seen in the rocks, witnesses of earlier life. In these landscapes, Bekker combines graphic techniques with painting techniques. Jules Bekker later specializes in sharper contours and fragmentary figures in a harmonious composition of colorful environments. At certain times the paintings reach a degree of abstraction. Jules Bekker's work is undogmatic and positive, brilliant in color and sunny in character.
