John LIE A FO (Paramaribo 1945)
Sculptor - Painter - Graphic artist
John Lie A Fo attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Free Academy in The Hague.
The artist John Lie A Fo is in close contact with the nature and culture of his native region. In his work he brings to life the myths, mores and customs of the Maroons and Indians. The direct painting method seems primitive at first sight, but the symbolism of each part in his rendering must be seen as a fierce experience of the ritual mysticism between voodoo and reality. The wooden statues, the large murals, the serigraphs and the paintings that Lie a Fo makes reflect the special bond with Surinamese culture.
His artistic aspirations are fueled by a romantic desire to experience and display various aspects of this culture, in which the strong connection between man and nature still exists. He depicts people in a somewhat primitive way, with big eyes and mouths, clumsy limbs and outspread hands. All this is painted with a loose touch, so that man and his symbols cannot be distinguished exactly from each other. In his work John Lie A Fo not only depicts attributes used in voodoo rites, but he also tries to convey the spiritual experience of this form of animism. He uses a primitivist visual language in which color and form represent generally valid meanings. In this way Lie A Fo makes the viewer part of his attempt to penetrate the mythical world of his 'roots'.
