Johannes GRADT VAN ROGGEN (Amsterdam 1867 - Alkmaar 1959)

Johannes Graadt van Roggen was a Dutch painter who can be seen as a forerunner of the Bergen School. Because he was deaf and mute from the age of three, he was a visually oriented artist who mainly painted what he saw. During his youth he received his education at the deaf and dumb institute in Groningen, after which he started painting. He painted a lot outdoors, especially dune landscapes, but also harbor views and cityscapes. He lived most of his life in Bergen aan Zee, where he also made many paintings. In addition to being a painter, he was also a well-known etcher and made etchings after the example of the Hague School. Works by Graadt van Roggen can be seen in the Drents Museum in Assen, Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen and the Stedelijk Museum in Alkmaar.
