Johan D. SCHERFT (The Hague 1891 - The Hague 1969)
Scherft came from a humble family. After primary school he went to work as a printer's apprentice at Drukkerij HP de Swart in the Oude Molstraat. In the little time he had left, he and his nephew went out to draw and paint after nature. He also started an art gallery, where graphics by James Ensor, Picasso, Paul Citroen and Willem Rozendaal, among others, were exhibited. The special thing about Johan's company was the good relationship with graphic artists who had their work printed there, such as Dirk van Gelder and Thijs Mauve. In 1943 the company came to an end: the Germans advanced except for the etching press after the entire contents of the printing house. After a stay in Zeist, where he made etchings for Christmas and New Year's cards for much-needed income, he returned to The Hague in 1954 and started Plaatdrukkerij Scherft, which acquired a large customer base. In 1963 he also founded the Haags Grafisch Kunstcentrum, one of the first graphic workshops in the Netherlands, where artists could increase their experience in the graphic field and experiment with printing techniques. In between his work, Johan Scherft remained active as a visual artist. He painted landscapes and still lifes in the style of the Hague School. His watercolors and drawings have also been preserved and more than 140 etchings. That he was highly regarded as a printer and as an artist is evident from the fact that in 1969 an in memoriam exhibition was organized in the Haagsche Kunstkring with etchings by himself and artists for whom he had printed.
