Jean Paul Franssens (Groningen, 5-2-1938, 19-6-2003) studied directing and singing in Essen, Germany. He subsequently worked as a director at Opera Forum in Enschede and De Nederlandse Opera, among others. He also wrote plays and opera libretti, which he often directed himself and provided with sets. As a visual artist he was self-taught. He exhibited his work frequently in the Netherlands, but also in Paris and Copenhagen, for example. As a writer, he made his debut in 1981 with the novella De Wisselwachter, which was made into a film by filmmaker Jos Stelling under the same title. The third part of his autobiographical trilogy Een Gouden Kind (1991), Een Goede Vader (1993) and Broederweelde (1995) was also filmed by Jos Stelling in 1999 under the title ?No trains, No plains?.
