Jan van Herwijnen (1889-1965)

Jan van Herwijnen (1889-1965)

Johannes Adrianus George 'Jan' van Herwijnen (Delft, November 4, 1889 - Bergen (North Holland), April 12, 1965) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. Jan van Herwijnen was self-taught. He came from a working-class family, and when he was fourteen years old he already moved to England and earned a living there in all kinds of jobs, he was also a cook's mate on board sea-going ships. He developed his talent by copying paintings in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. A scholarship in 1912, made available by the director of the Rijksmuseum Jhr. Van Riemsdijk enabled him to devote himself entirely to painting and drawing. Van Herwijnen traveled a lot and worked for some time in Paris and the south of France. In 1919 he already had an exhibition in the Heystee building on the Herengracht in Amsterdam, where his drawings could be seen, among other things. After working in Amsterdam, then in Arnhem until 1926, and in Heemstede, he settled in Bergen in 1939, where his His style developed in his landscapes, flower paintings and still lifes, which are considered to be part of the Bergen School. In 1919 he made a series of thirty large portrait drawings of psychiatric patients in the Willem Arntsz Hoeve in Utrecht. He is also known for his portraits of the deceased in the mortuary of the Wilhelminagasthuis in Amsterdam. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and the Artists Center in Bergen. In 2008, the Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen held a major retrospective of his work, entitled Jan van Herwijnen, painter out of self-preservation. Art historian Caroline Roodenburg-Schadd (curator at the Museum of Modern Art Arnhem) wrote a monograph on Van Herwijnen under the same title.
