Jan Korthals was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Later he was taught by his uncle Marie Henry Mackenzie. Jan Korthals was best known for his striking portraits and atmospheric cityscapes. He regularly received orders for cityscapes that were incorporated into calendars. This made him widely popular. His Amsterdam cityscapes, in which the brown tone predominates, remind us most of Breitner. Here the influence of his uncle and teacher Marie Henry Mackenzie is unmistakably recognizable, who herself was apprenticed to Breitner for a longer period of time. Jan Korthals also liked to visit Paris and Italy, where he made many ink drawings, which he later turned into oil paintings in his studio in Amsterdam.
