Johannes Hubertus (Jan) Grégoire (Maastricht, September 11, 1887 - Amsterdam, February 11, 1960) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. Jan was born in Maastricht, where his mother ran a café on the Vrijthof. He lived and worked in Maastricht, Brussels and Charleroi until 1910, after which he settled permanently in Amsterdam. Jan attended l'Ecole Normale des Arts du Dessin in Brussels. He received lessons from the painter Jhr. Robert Graafland, who founded the Sunday School for Decorative Arts in 1902. There he taught his students to paint and draw from nature. Graafland was the guide of many working-class children in Maastricht, in whom he suspected artistic talent. He led Jan into the world of artistry. He also later urged him to go to the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam (1913-15). Jan received many commissions and was a successful artist. He has also championed provision funds for artists as a forerunner of the government scheme, the so-called 'counter-performance', to give artists a chance. He also wrote two novels and was a member of the 'Arti et Amicitia_' society in Amsterdam. Jan Gr_goire became the ancestor of a family of artists. His son Paul Gr_goire became a sculptor. Of his grandchildren, P_p_ became a sculptor and Kenne and H_l
