Jan Eversen (1906-1995)

Jan Eversen (1906-1995)

JAN EVERSEN (The Hague 1906 - Arnhem 1995)

Watercolourist, painter

Eversen was a student of W. Lampe in the 1930s. He started out as a portrait painter, but during his education at the Heatherley School of Art in London (1930), he discovered the beauty of the still life painters Willem Heda, Pieter Claesz and Clara Peeters. The painter devoted himself more and more to perfecting the rendering of texture and the reflection of light on the various objects he depicted. According to experts, Eversen almost equaled the technique of old masters such as Rembrandt, Paulus Potter and Jan Steen.

Eversen mainly painted excellent still lifes, but also landscapes and portraits in neo-realistic style. He was a member of the Nederlandse Kunstkring and lived and worked for many years in Ede (Gelderland), where he also painted a number of landscapes.

'Jan' Eversen, as he was called, was much more famous during his lifetime, especially in Great Britain than in the Netherlands. There is increasing interest in the Netherlands in his 'Rembrandtsque' work.

Eversen's work can be found in the National Gallery in London and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, among others.

He was the son of Johannes Hendrik Eversen (illegitimate son of Johanna Carolina Eversen) and Eugenie Maria Reinsberg.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, a retrospective was organized in 2006 in the suburb of Kernhem in Ede. The initiator was Mr Jan HA Morsink in Enschede . At the same time, the book "Jan Eversen-The light master" was published in collaboration with the Rotary - Ede. by Wim Rijkeboer.
