Jan Altink was an important artist when it came to Expressionism. He came from a farming family, and rural life has influenced his work in many ways. In 1915 he founded his own advertising agency and in 1918 the art circle De Ploeg was founded, partly by Jan Altink. He taught himself at the Groningen Academy from 1934. Besides painting, he also designed a book binding for Bosch and Keunig in 1937.
Jan Altink had several students over the years, including Siep van den Berg, Marten Klompien and Eddy Wieringa. Jan Altink's work hangs in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
