Hugo CLAUS (Bruges 1929 - Antwerp 2008).
Education: Hugo Claus was involved in CoBrA, of which he became a member in 1950. Some expressionistic gouaches date from that period. Claus took part in several small CoBrA exhibitions. Belgium_
Hugo Claus's share in the movement was not large and, according to him, was based on the friendships he maintained with various members, which is evident, for example, from the fact that Pierre Alechinsky illustrated his book 'Without Form of Process' in 1949. In addition, Asger Jorn painted a mural in his house in Ghent and Christian Dotremont assisted him in creating many peinture-mots. As a visual artist, Hugo Claus exhibited in many countries. His work, often slightly mocking in nature, is widely loved. In 1988 he published the novel 'A gentle destruction', in which he looks back with irony on the early 1950s and the CoBrA period.
