Henri Schoonbrood (1898-1972)

Henri SCHOONBROOD (Maastricht 1898 - Maastricht 1972)

Henri was the second of 6 children in the family. Both parents died when Henri was 6 years old. He was initially a house and decorative painter. From 1925 to 1929, the young Henri took painting lessons from Henri Jonas and at the same time received art education at the Secondary Applied Arts School in Maastricht. He was also a member of the Limburgse Kunstkring and could often be found in caf_ Suisse, Bende van De Suisse, at the Vrijthof in Maastricht. In 1926 he took part in a competition of Arti et Amicitiae (Willink van Collen competition), a prize that was awarded in Amsterdam to painters under the age of 35. He painted "the goat" and won the shared first prize, together with Charles Eyck. He then left for the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam together with fellow art brothers Hubert Levigne, Paul Kromjong and Cephas Stauthamer in 1930. Here he followed the monumental art course under the guidance of professor Richard Roland Holst. After his education, he returned to Maastricht, after which he was a teacher at the Secondary Applied Arts School for a while. A highlight in his oeuvre is the painting "The Emmaus Gangers" from 1929, now in the Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. During his stay in Amsterdam he received his first monumental commissions. Many followed. He made more than 100 windows for churches, public institutions and private individuals. He also produced many murals and mosaics. Unfortunately, the mural in the station restoration in Maastricht was painted over. Well-known mosaics can be found in the music conservatory in Maastricht, and the office building of the Royal Air Force in The Hague. Henri Schoonbrood lived most of his life in a stately mansion in the center of Maastricht, together with his wife Greet Schoonbrood. After his wife died in 1971, his life also came to an end in 1972.
