Henk Hesselius belongs to the first post-war generation of modern visual artists. The Benjamin of the Cobra movement has continued to work in his unique style for the past 65 years.
His painting is characterized by the use of bright colors and strong brushstrokes, which gives his abstract work an enormous expression.
The sculpture of Hesselius shows austere or playful geometric shapes, constructed from welded or forged steel.
Henk Hesselius, born May 23, 1927 in Amsterdam, education MTS mechanical engineering and three years National Academy of the Visual Arts. Was a member of the staff advisory committee for Visual Arts, the Amsterdam Art Council, the Gaasperdam Federation and working group, and was chairman of the Dutch Circle of Sculptors for eight years. Work in public collections and in numerous private collections at home and abroad.
During his career as an artist, Hesselius occupied various positions within committees and institutions for the visual arts. Over the years, Hesselius has built up a reputation for serving the interests of art and fellow artists with dedication.
At the beginning of his career, Hesselius, like Karel Appel, still manifested himself as an 'action painter', but from the early 1970s he opted for more structure and framing within his works. This did not mean in the least that he lost his own style. Hesselius is an artist who is constantly developing and looking for new forms, while maintaining his own identity.
