Gijs van Schaik was self-taught, because the eldest in a mason family with five children could of course not go to the academy, although from an early age he drew everything that was loose and stuck. He also played creditably the clarinet, but did not get a musical education either. An art education was not financially possible, but advice from other painters cost nothing: Gijs van Schaik sought and got in touch with other Gooise painters such as David Schulman, Anton Smeerdijk, Dirk Smorenberg, Cornelis Scherrewitz and AJ Zwart. Gijs van Schaik was originally a house and decorative painter. His health left much to be desired; he was a heavy smoker. He developed a heart condition and was operated on in the Wilhelmina hospital in Amsterdam. He also painted in the hospital: his cityscapes were very popular with emigrants who took his works with them to Canada, Australia and South America. The Modern art dealership in Gijsbrecht van Amstelstraat in Hilversum also regularly sold his work. At the end of the Second World War Gijs van Schaik was hungry. This drove him from his hometown of 's-Graveland near Hilversum to the east of the country. His search brought him to South Drenthe. He went through the landscape there and saw how beautiful it was. Later on he kept coming back, now no longer for food, but to paint. He mainly painted in the village of De Wijk and its environs: small farms, the peat ships in the Hoogeveensche vaart. He placed his easel in the landscape and painted what he saw: as it happened in the 19th century at Barbizon in France and as the painters of the Hague School did in the Netherlands, the 'plein air' painters.
