Gerrit RIETVELD (Utrecht 1888 - Utrecht 1964)
At the beginning of the twentieth century, artist and designer Gerrit Rietveld was trained as a draftsman in the goldsmith's shop of CJA Begeer. He then learned architectural drawing at PJC Klaarhamer. When he started his own furniture studio in 1917, he designed the first version of the well -known Red and Blue Chair (1918), which he painted for the first time five years later. He met Theo van Doesburg and Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud, who experimented with the same elements. In 1919, Rietveld thus became one of the first members of De Stijl. His collaboration with Truus Schröder began in 1921 for the design of the Schröder House, where he himself moved in at the end of the 1950s. In the 1940s and 1950s, he also became increasingly known internationally. Rietveld's designs, especially his furniture, are very influential to this day and he is also seen as a pioneer of modernism. Rietveld reacted with his designs in a very direct way and in a clear visual language to his environment.
