Gerrit Kouwenaar (1923-2014)

Gerrit Kouwenaar (1923-2014)

Gerrit Kouwenaar, born in Amsterdam 9-8-1923 and died in Amsterdam 4-9-2014, poet, translator, art editor, draftsman. Kouwenaar made his debut in World War II with a number of clandestine publications, including ?Early Spring Day?, and with contributions to illegal magazines such as ?Parade der Propheten?. He was sentenced to six months in prison for this. He went into hiding after his release. From 1945 to 1950 he was art editor of the daily newspaper De Waarheid, then the largest newspaper in the Netherlands. He then became a freelancer for Vrij Nederland and editor of the literary magazine Podium. He later reviewed visual art for Het Vrije Volk and became editor of the leading cultural magazine De Gids. He was also affiliated with the magazine Reflex and came into contact with the Experimentele Groep in Holland and later with the experimental artists' group COBRA. In 1949, together with the Cobra painter Constant, he published 'Goede morgen haan', a combination of poems and drawings (Peinture-mots). Gerrit Kouwenaar has been considered one of the most important poets from the Dutch-speaking region since the 1950s. From a rebellious fifties he had grown into the ?_minence grise? of Dutch poetry. The oeuvre is not only appreciated by a large readership, but has also exerted an enormous influence on fellow poets. Kouwenaar received numerous awards for his poems, including the PCHooftpijs (1971) and the prize of Dutch literature (1989). In 1967 he received the Martinus Nijhoff Prize for his translation work of plays by, for example, Brecht, Goethe and Sartre. Initially he was mainly a socially and politically motivated experimental poet, later his work was more focused on the use of language in poetry. Kouwenaar strived for poetry that is autonomous and speaks for itself. The painter and poet David Kouwenaar (1921-2011) was his older brother. Gerrit Kouwenaar died at the age of 91 and was buried at Zorgvlied (Amsterdam).
