Gaston DE MEY (Kaprijke 1933 - Eeklo 2015)
Gaston De Mey was a painter and photographer. After his education at the Art Academy of Eeklo, he initially painted figuratively, but from 1968 onwards he made a radical transition to abstraction. He used the 26 letters of the alphabet as the core of his works, using letters as purely abstract elements for geometric compositions. In the later years of his career he began to incorporate names of artists and philosophers, as well as literary quotations, into his work by means of mirror constructions.
