Frans Slager (1876-1953)

Frans Slager (1876-1953)

's-Hertogenbosch 1876 – 1953 Meerhout, Belgium.

Frans was primarily a landscape painter. His paintings betray the influence of the Barbizon School. He often found his subjects in the Netherlands in the Brabant Kempen, but also in Belgium, France, Germany and Italy. The gothic Sint Jan cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch was a source of inspiration for him and often a characteristic element in his landscapes.

Frans Slager was the second son of the Bossche artist PM Slager. He was a student of his father. Later, Slager worked as an apprentice in Antwerp at the Academy of Visual Arts and also with Frans van Leemputten. He mostly lived and worked in Den Bosch. He later settled in Meerhout (Belgium), where he died in 1935. He was married to the painter MPA van Gilse.
