Droese was born the son of an Old Catholic priest and spent his childhood on the North Sea island of North Beach in Husum. 1966 the family moved to Essen, where Felix Droese finished school in 1969 without school and worked as a surveying assistant. From 1970 to 1976 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the class Peter Brüning, but worked mainly in the Beuys class. From 1971 to 1972 he did his military service in the State psychiatric institute Düsseldorf-Grafenberg. The politically engaged artist was arrested at a Vietnam demonstration in Cologne in 1972 and sentenced for aggravated disturbance of the public order to seven months in prison, suspended to three years' probation. After studying Droese worked as a temp in a garden and landscape and cemetery gardener in Buederich and the magazine, "Tracks" in Cologne. and 1979 competed as a candidate for the Green Alternative List in the local elections in Düsseldorf. In 1986 he accepted a professorship at the Städel School in Frankfurt am Main, where he re-announced after a winter semester. Since 1990 he has lived and worked with his wife, the artist Irmel Droese, in Mettmann, near Düsseldorf.
