Emil Schumacher (1912-1999)

Emil SCHUMACHER (Hagen 1912 - Sant Josep de sa Talaia 1999)

Schumacher was a German painter and graphic artist. Schumacher studied from 1932 to 1935 at the arts and crafts school in Dortmund and made frequent trips abroad. In 1937 he became acquainted with the painter Christian Rohlfs, whom he met in his studio. From 1935 to 1939 he was established as a free artist and he made study trips to the Netherlands and Belgium. During the Second World War he was in military service as a technical draftsman in Hagen, working in the armament industry. After the war, he resumed his artistry and painted cubist landscapes. In 1948, along with Gustav Deppe, Thomas Grochowiak, Ernst Hermanns, Heinrich Siepmann and Hans Werdelhausen, he was one of the founders of the avant-garde artist group Junger Westen in Recklinghausen. In 1951 he visited Paris with Grochowiak and Hermanns, where he came into contact with the painter Pierre Soulages and informal painting.
