Dirk Baksteen (Rotterdam, March 29, 1886 - Antwerp, September 24, 1971) was a Belgian painter and etcher. Baksteen, son of Dirk Baksteen and Jansje van Heiningen, grew up in a family of ten children and had to help maintain the family as a house painter. . However, Brick, like his brother Gerard, became a painter at a young age. On the advice of this brother, Baksteen ended up in Antwerp in 1912. In the Kempen, both brothers came into contact with the painter Jakob Smits, who was also born in Rotterdam. His brother withdrew to Antwerp, but Baksteen stayed with Smits to study there as a painter. Brick did not receive an academic painting course like his brother. Smits and Baksteen spent many hours in Smits' studio, who soon realized that Baksteen had more talent for graphic art. Because of his stay in Mol, Baksteen is counted as part of the Molse School. Through Smits, Baksteen also got to know the American William Sherwood. He showed Baksteen how he could now print his etchings himself. Soon Baksteen was nicknamed the Etser van de Kempen and his work became known in Belgium and later also in Germany and the United States. He produced more than 300 etchings. Baksteen's work can be found in the Jakob Smits Museum in Mol in Belgium.
